How the story player works

Stories are live for 24 hours and then gone. This shows everything a public account currently has up, in a player you can step through.

Every story a public account has posted in the last 24 hours loads as a grid, each tile showing when it was posted and how long it has left before it expires. Open any of them and the full-screen player takes over, with progress bars across the top the same way the app presents them.

Photo frames advance on a timer and video frames run to their natural end, or you can move manually with the arrow keys, pause with space, and close with escape. Play all runs the set from the beginning.

Anything you want to keep has to be saved while the story is live. Once the 24 hours are up Instagram stops serving that media entirely.

Each tile shows how long it has left; the player runs the set like the app does.

How Instagram stories work

A story is a photo or short video that sits above the profile grid for 24 hours and is then removed. Unlike a post, it is not part of the permanent profile — the format was built around the idea that not everything needs to be kept.

For a public account, live stories are served openly, which is what allows them to be viewed without signing in. Once the 24-hour window closes, the media stops being served at all. It is not merely hidden from view: there is no longer anything to request.

Why old stories cannot be recovered

This is the single most common misunderstanding about story tools. No viewer can retrieve a story from last week, because expired stories are not accessible to anyone outside the account holder’s own archive.

If a story matters, save it while it is live. The one lasting exception is highlights: when an account saves a story to a highlight, it stops expiring and stays on the profile permanently.

What a story can contain

Stories carry more than plain media. They often include mentions of other accounts, location tags, music, polls, questions and link stickers. The underlying photo or video is what downloads; interactive stickers are overlays rendered by the app and are not part of the saved file.

About viewing and being seen

Instagram shows account holders a list of who viewed each story, and that list is built from viewers signed into Instagram accounts. This tool does not sign you in, which is why it is fair to describe it as a way of viewing public stories without connecting your account.

What would not be fair is promising that a platform can never register anything at all. That is a claim about Instagram’s internal systems that no external tool is in a position to verify, and treating it as a guarantee would be misleading.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How long do Instagram stories stay available?

Twenty-four hours from posting. After that Instagram stops serving the media entirely.

Can I see stories from last week?

No. Expired stories are not served to anyone. Only stories saved to a highlight remain available.

Why does this account show no stories?

They have not posted in the last 24 hours, or the account is private.

Can I download story videos?

Yes. Videos save as MP4 and photos as JPG, in the quality Instagram serves them.

Do polls and stickers download too?

No. Stickers are overlays the app draws on top; the saved file is the underlying photo or video.
