What Instagram highlights are, and where they come from

A highlight is a saved collection of old stories, pinned under the bio as a row of circles. Each has a title and a cover image.

It starts with the story archive. By default, Instagram saves every story you post to a private archive once its 24 hours are up. Only you can see that archive. When you create a highlight, you pick stories from it and publish them again as a permanent set. So a highlight isn’t a separate format. It’s old stories the owner decided to make public again.

That has two effects. Highlights can go back years. And they’re always a selection: the owner chose what stays and what doesn’t.

How the Instagram highlight viewer works

Covers first, then the album opens out frame by frame, oldest to newest.

Search a username and every highlight on the profile loads as a set of covers. Open one and it plays like a story: photos, videos and music, in the order the owner arranged them. Your Instagram account is never used.

  1. Type the username or paste the profile link.
  2. Tap View anonymously, then open Highlights.
  3. Tap a cover to play it. Tap right to skip, left to go back.

Highlights are ordered the same way as in the app. The one the owner updated most recently usually sits first, which is a quick way to see what they’ve been adding to lately.

Who can see that you viewed a highlight?

This surprises most people: usually nobody.

Each story keeps its viewer list for 48 hours after it was first posted, not after it was added to a highlight. So:

In practice, only the newest one or two stories in a highlight can reveal a viewer. Watching through IGviewr removes that too. For the full detail on how viewer lists work, see the Story Viewer guide.

How businesses use highlights, and what to look for

For small businesses, highlights often replace a website. Common titles and what they tell you:

Highlight titleWhat it usually holdsWhat to check
Reviews / FeedbackScreenshots of customer messagesThe dates. A reviews highlight with nothing newer than a year is a warning sign
Prices / MenuPrice lists, menus, packagesWhether prices match what they quote you in DMs
Delivery / ShippingAreas covered, times, feesReal delivery photos, not only graphics
FAQ / InfoPayment, returns, sizesPayment methods. Bank transfer only, with no return policy, needs care
Orders / PackingPhotos of packed ordersWhether the same parcel photos repeat

Screenshots of reviews are easy to fake. They’re more convincing when you can tap through to the customer’s real account, or find the same customers tagging the shop in its Tagged tab in the Profile Viewer.

How creators and brands use them

Creators use highlights as a portfolio: past brand collabs, press, events, and a "Work with me" or media kit highlight. If you’re vetting an influencer for a brand deal, their collab highlight shows who has already paid them. Check whether those brands kept working with them. Repeat partners are a good sign.

Larger brands use highlights for product categories, launches and store locations, updating them each season.

Using highlights for your own Instagram

Looking at how others build highlights is a fast way to improve your own. When you browse a competitor’s profile, note:

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can someone see who viewed their Instagram highlights?

Only for stories posted in the last 48 hours. Older stories in a highlight have no viewer list, and watching through IGviewr never adds your name anyway.

How far back can highlights go?

As far back as the owner’s story archive, which is on by default. Some accounts have highlights from years ago.

Why did a highlight disappear?

The owner deleted or renamed it, or removed every story in it. Highlights can also vanish if the account goes private.

Can I see highlights without an account?

Yes. Type the username into IGviewr and open the Highlights tab.

Do highlights expire?

No. They stay until the owner removes them.
