View Instagram followers anonymously
In the app you can tap a follower count to see the list, but only with an account, and your activity is tied to it. On a private profile, you’d need to be following first.
IGviewr opens both lists for any public account with no account at all. Each row shows the profile picture, @username, display name and verified badge. Tap a row to open that profile in the Profile Viewer.
- Type the username.
- Tap View anonymously, then choose Followers or Following.
- Use the search box to check whether a particular account is in the list, rather than scrolling.
How to check if an account’s followers are real
A big follower count means nothing if it was bought. You can get a fair picture in about ten minutes with a simple sample:
- Open the Followers list and look at 50 accounts spread through it, not just the top.
- Mark each one as real or suspect. Suspect means two or more of: no profile picture, zero posts, a handle made of random letters and numbers, following thousands while followed by almost nobody.
- Work out the share. If 15 of your 50 look suspect, roughly 30% of the audience may be fake.
- Compare with engagement. Check likes and comments on recent posts in the Post Viewer. Fake followers never engage, so a large fake share shows up as weak engagement.
Some inactive followers are normal on every account. People abandon profiles. It’s a high share combined with low engagement that points to buying.
| Follower looks like | Likely |
|---|---|
| Profile picture, posts, follows a normal number of accounts | Real |
| No picture, no posts, but an ordinary name | Inactive real person, or a lurker |
| Random handle, no picture, no posts, follows 3,000+ | Bot or bought follower |
| Many followers from one country the business doesn’t serve | Bought followers or a follow-for-follow group |
What the order of a follower list means
Many people want to read meaning into the order. The honest answer is that it tells you less than you’d hope.
Instagram doesn’t publish how it orders other people’s follower and following lists, and the order has changed over the years. In our experience, recent follows often appear near the top of a following list, but not reliably, and mutual connections and accounts you interact with can be mixed in.
On your own account, Instagram lets you sort the list you follow by "Date followed: Latest" or "Earliest". That option doesn’t exist for anyone else’s list, in the app or in any viewer.
So don’t read a relationship into who sits in position three. If you need to know what changed, the only dependable method is to compare the list at two different times.
What a following list tells you
The people an account follows are its own choice, which makes the list revealing:
- For a brand: it shows suppliers, partner brands and the creators they’re watching. Useful for competitor research.
- For an influencer: it shows which brands they genuinely engage with, and whether they follow thousands of accounts to get follow-backs.
- For finding someone: a mutual friend’s following list is often the quickest way to find an account you can’t search by name.
One limit to know: an Instagram account can follow at most 7,500 accounts. Anyone near that number is likely running follow-for-follow.
Limits
- Private accounts: only the counts are visible. Both lists stay hidden.
- Very large lists: Instagram limits how much of a list loads, so accounts with hundreds of thousands of followers may show a partial list.
- No dates, no unfollows: Instagram doesn’t make public when someone followed or who unfollowed, so no tool can show this accurately.
Frequently asked questions
Can someone see that I looked at their followers?
No. Instagram doesn’t record who opens a follower list, and IGviewr doesn’t use your account.
Can I see who someone recently followed?
Not with certainty. Recent follows often appear near the top of a following list, but Instagram doesn’t guarantee the order.
How can I tell if someone bought followers?
Sample 50 of their followers for empty, random-handle accounts, then compare with how many likes and comments their posts get.
Can I see a private account’s followers?
No. Only the follower and following counts are shown.
What’s the maximum number of accounts you can follow on Instagram?
7,500.
